Leon Draisaitl Sets a New NHL Record for Most Overtime Goals Scored in One Playoff Year

As the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime in game four of the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals, Leon Draisaitl, who scored the game-winning overtime goal, has set a new NHL record for most overtime goals scored in one playoff year with his fourth.

Leon Draisaitl’s four overtime goals in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Draisaitl has scored all of his goals in the latter half of each overtime, with three coming in the final five minutes. Draisaitl’s overtime winners in game four against the Kings and game one against the Panthers were both on the powerplay. In game two against the Vegas Golden Knights, Draisaitl scored shortly after a controversial non-call on the Oilers, where Draisaitl finished off a two-on-one rush from Connor McDavid. Draisaitl’s record-setting goal in game four against the Panthers was a one-handed goal off of a two-on-one rush that went off the skate of Panthers’ defenceman Niko Mikkola.

Both of Draisaitl’s game four goals were crucial, as the Oilers were down 2-1 in both series. Against the Kings, the Oilers overcame a 3-1 third period deficit to avoid going down 3-1 in the series, and against the Panthers, the Oilers overcame a 3-0 deficit after the first period to avoid going down 3-1 in the finals. In the process, the Oilers became the first team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a Stanley Cup Final’s game since the Carolina Hurricanes did so against the Oilers in game one of the 2006 finals. The Oilers are the first road team to accomplish this feat since the 1919 Montreal Canadiens, where they overcame a 3-0 deficit in the third period to win in overtime to tie the 1919 finals 2-2, which would be the last game played in the 1919 finals due to the influenza outbreak, causing the finals to end without a Stanley Cup champion.

There have been four players to score three overtime goals in a single post-season. Coincidentally, two of them have come within the last 10 years after a 65 year gap between the previous occurrence.

Most overtime goals in a single NHL post-season

All three of the most recent players to score three or more overtime goals in a single post-season are currently playing in the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals. In 1939, Mel Hill had all three overtime goals in a single series against the New York Rangers, including a game seven triple overtime winner, the second longest game seven of all time.
